Children in Ħal Għaxaq joined in a heartwarming event this week to celebrate animal welfare. The event, held during the week of April 14, 2025, aimed to teach kids about the importance of animals, not just as pets, but as valuable helpers in society.
Alicia Bugeja Said, the Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Animal Rights, attended the event. She emphasized the importance of fostering empathy for animals from a young age. “Love for animals begins in childhood,” she said. “Activities like this help teach future generations respect and care for animals.”
The children were gifted animal-themed books from the Office of the Animal Welfare Commissioner. The books aimed to strengthen children’s connection with animals, offering both education and fun.
The event also allowed kids to meet dogs and horses from the Police Force. This hands-on experience helped the children understand the vital roles animals play in public service, such as search and rescue operations and maintaining community safety. Mayor Karl Boxall attended and praised the event for its long-term impact. “Educational initiatives like this help create generations with a better understanding of animal welfare,” he said.
Looking ahead, families can look forward to another exciting event at the Esplora Interactive Science Centre in Kalkara on April 26 and 27, 2025. The Paws and Claws Easter Adventure will offer a mix of science, technology, and education for children and their pets. The event will feature interactive science shows and involve over 20 local animal sector collaborators. Visitors will have the chance to meet unusual animals, including reptiles and snakes.
These events aim to nurture a future generation with a strong sense of empathy towards animals. By promoting animal welfare through education, communities are helping to instill respect for all living beings from a young age.
