The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced on April 21 that it will launch a new support program in May to provide education activity funds for 53,000 children from low-income multicultural families.
The funds will help cover the cost of teaching materials, study rooms, and supplies for arts, physical education, and vocational training. It will also support certification programs.
This program has been in place since last year to expand educational opportunities for children from multicultural families. The goal is to strengthen their career skills and reduce learning gaps.
For 2025, the program will focus on multicultural households with children aged 7 to 18 whose income is below the median income. Parents, children, or relatives within the third degree are eligible to apply.
The support amount varies by school level: 400,000 won for elementary school students, 500,000 won for middle school students, and 600,000 won for high school students. The funds will be provided through NH Nonghyup Card (Chaeum) credits.
The government will accept applications in two rounds this year: the first from May 2 to 30, and the second from July 1 to 31. Those who apply in the first round will receive the funds in June, while the second round applicants will receive them in August. The funds must be used by the end of November, or they will expire.
Choi Sung-ji, director of family policy at the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, expressed hope that this initiative will help children from multicultural families develop their future potential.
