Pope High School Teacher Sharee Thomas Focuses on the Whole Child

by Beatrice

At Pope High School, students walk into Sharee Thomas’ classroom knowing they’ll gain more than just knowledge about anatomy, physiology, and biology. They enter a space where they are truly seen, heard, and celebrated.

“I focus on teaching the whole child,” said Ms. Thomas. “I teach science, but I also see each student as an individual—someone who’s discovering themselves, trying to make sense of their world, their friends, and family.”

Her strong connection with students and her empowering approach to teaching led them to nominate her for FOX 5’s High 5 Teachers contest. Now, her students and the entire Cobb County community can show their support by voting for her to win the prestigious recognition. Voting runs through April 25 at noon.

From the Medical Field to the Classroom

Ms. Thomas did not always plan to be a teacher. She began her career in the medical field, working as an EMT in New York. At one point, she worked with patients recovering from traumatic brain injuries and aimed to become a doctor.

However, her path shifted when she saw the growing need for teachers—particularly science and minority teachers. With a family background in education and a strong foundation in science, Ms. Thomas decided to enter the classroom and make a difference in students’ lives.

“I did it, and I never turned back. I love it,” she said.

Teaching Science—and Much More

Ms. Thomas recognizes the stress students often face during high school, especially with everything happening in their personal lives. That’s why she goes beyond teaching just science.

“You have kids from different backgrounds, with varying levels of education. You have to see beyond just the content,” she explained. “I teach science, but I’m also teaching someone’s child.”

Her teaching approach is rooted in authenticity, empathy, and connection.

“I’m teaching a student who has a voice, who may be struggling outside my class. I make it clear that I see my students,” she added.

Why She Chose Cobb County

After teaching in several states, Ms. Thomas chose Cobb County for a reason.

“I heard this was the best district for teaching. I’m so excited to be here,” she said.

She is especially drawn to Cobb’s focus on technology and innovation.

“The county is bringing in innovative technology and strategies, and I wanted to be part of that,” she said.

She’s already making the most of these resources, using virtual reality (VR) headsets to enhance her students’ learning experiences.

“Using VR goggles allows me to teach my students in a completely new way, helping them not just learn, but experience the content,” she explained.

Humbled and Grateful

Being nominated as one of metro Atlanta’s top teachers has been a humbling experience for Ms. Thomas.

“It feels awesome. Very humbling. It’s amazing to know how much I’m loved in this community and how much my students appreciate the difference I’m making,” she shared.

Her students are her biggest motivation. She loves watching them grow and encouraging them to be themselves.

“I love the energy they bring to my classroom. I also remind them it’s okay to be different, it’s okay to be unique,” she said.

Ms. Thomas’ impact on her students and her dedication to teaching goes far beyond the classroom.
