Electrolux Group Marks Earth Day by Teaching Kids About Sustainable Eating

by Beatrice

On Earth Day, Electrolux Group welcomed nearly 120 fifth-grade students from Mallard Creek STEM Academy to its Charlotte headquarters for a special event focused on sustainable eating. The event, called Food Heroes, is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to educate children about the environmental impact of food choices.

This marks the third time Electrolux has partnered with the school to host a Food Heroes event. Similar sessions were held in June and September of last year.

Food Heroes is a global initiative by the Electrolux Food Foundation. It aims to teach children aged 7 to 11 how their food choices affect the planet. The program fits well with the mission of the ZEN (Zealous Empowering Nurturer) program at Mallard Creek STEM Academy, which brings gardening and food education into classrooms.

The curriculum includes a variety of lessons. Students learn how food gets from farms to grocery stores, how to read food labels, and how to reduce food waste.

“Our goal, in partnership with the Electrolux Food Foundation, is to inspire young people to make food choices that are good for the planet,” said Ricardo Cons, President and CEO of Electrolux Group North America. “It’s exciting to see their enthusiasm both in the classroom and the kitchen. Teaching kids how to eat well and waste less helps them build lifelong habits. These students have truly earned the title of ‘food heroes.’”

Since its launch in 2019, Food Heroes has reached over 200,000 children in more than 30 countries. The program expanded to North America in 2024. During its first year in the region, Electrolux hosted four events in Charlotte, reaching over 160 local children.

“Teaching children where food comes from and how to grow it helps them make healthier decisions,” said April Booker, founder of the ZEN program and a teacher at Mallard Creek STEM Academy. “They begin to understand how their choices affect the planet. We’re raising a generation of young gardeners and food advocates.”

To support this mission, the Electrolux Food Foundation offers its Food Heroes Toolkit online, free of charge. The toolkit is open to parents, teachers, chefs, and anyone interested in learning how food connects to environmental sustainability.
