After months inside classrooms, many Central Georgia children are now heading outdoors for summer fun. Camps across the region are helping kids swap textbooks for creeks, trees, and new friendships.
One standout program is Naturally Nurtured Nature Camp, located on Thomaston Road in Macon. This 13-week camp invites children to learn through hands-on activities in the woods. Each day, campers explore nature through water balloon games, creek play, and wildlife encounters.
“We’re gonna be getting down and dirty,” said Dawn Willis, owner of the camp. “Kids love catching frogs, toads, lizards, and crickets—you name it.”
The camp offers more than just outdoor fun. Willis said the program helps children grow in physical and emotional ways.
“We get our exercise, we build fine motor skills, we learn balance, and we gain confidence,” she explained.
In addition to nature exploration, the camp encourages teamwork and friendship. Social skills are a key part of the camp experience.
While summer programs like this can be costly, Naturally Nurtured Nature Camp stands out for its affordability. According to the American Camp Association, camps typically cost about $87 per day or $435 per week. In contrast, this Macon-based camp charges $45 per day, with flexible scheduling options that allow families to choose individual days or full weeks.
“As a mother, I raised my children here and worked full time,” said Willis. “I want to keep prices affordable for other families.”
Other camps in the region offer budget-friendly choices too. The city of Warner Robins runs a seven-week program at $125 per week for local residents. Bibb County offers a six-week program that costs just $180 in total, which breaks down to about $6 per day.
For families looking for free summer fun, local splash pads are another great way to stay cool.
Naturally Nurtured Nature Camp runs through August and welcomes children aged 3 to 14. The program also includes accommodations for campers with autism, helping more children enjoy nature in a safe, supportive setting.
With its mix of outdoor play, life skills, and inclusive spirit, this camp gives Central Georgia kids the chance to unplug, explore, and grow all summer long.
