Celebrating 60 Years of Head Start’s Impact on Millions of Children and Families

by Beatrice

This Sunday, May 18, marks the 60th anniversary of Head Start programs in the United States. Betsy Zorio, Vice President of U.S. Programs at Save the Children, released a statement to honor this milestone.

“For 60 years, Head Start has been an important support for hardworking families across the country. It offers quality early education and care to children who might not otherwise have that chance. Since it began, this federally funded preschool program has helped nearly 40 million children during their earliest and most important years, from birth to age five. For many low-income families, especially those living in rural areas, Head Start is often the only place where they can find child care, early education, health services, and nutritious meals.

This year has been uncertain for the 60-year-old program. However, one thing remains clear: there is a strong need for Head Start in low-income and rural communities across the nation. The program is backed by decades of research. It shows that investing early in children leads to lasting benefits. Children who attend Head Start are more likely to graduate from high school, attend college, and earn more over their lifetimes. They are also less likely to live in poverty or depend on public aid.

Save the Children runs Head Start and Early Head Start programs in rural areas in six states. We are proud to be part of the Head Start family. Every day, we see how these programs change lives. They bring hope, stability, and new opportunities to families who need them most. Head Start uses a two-generational approach. It helps children learn and grow while also supporting their parents to reach career goals. In the 2021-2022 school year alone, 80,000 adults received job training and education through Head Start. More than 20% of Head Start staff were once parents in the program. The program also creates important jobs in low-income and rural communities. About 260,000 staff members work every day to support children and families.

As we celebrate 60 years of Head Start, we must recognize its strong, positive effect on millions of children, families, and communities. At this important time, we must ensure Head Start not only continues but also grows. This will help families thrive for many years ahead. Congress must protect and support Head Start. This is vital not only for the children who depend on it now but also for future generations who will need these services.”
