More than 300 children from 11 primary schools across the Isle of Wight recently attended an educational day at the County Showground, hosted by the Royal Isle of Wight Agricultural Society (RIWAS). The event was held in the lead-up to this year’s Royal Isle of Wight County Show.
Thanks to funding from Isle of Wight Aid, children from schools across the island were able to travel to the venue, making sure all pupils could take part.
The County Show features 16 themed zones, offering young visitors a chance to get close to animals including pigs, sheep, and horses. The children also enjoyed tours, sports activities, and a ride through the woodlands on a tractor and trailer.
During the day, pupils engaged in hands-on demonstrations. They were encouraged to ask questions, touch the animals, and learn through play and observation.
Graham Biss, Chairman of the County Show, praised the event:
“We were delighted to provide a fun and educational experience for the children. The animals were the real highlight. It was fantastic to see the children’s faces light up with curiosity and excitement. A big thank you to our volunteers who helped make the day such a success.”
Teachers and pupils also spoke positively about the day. Vicky Briddle from Northwood Primary School said:
“Our pupils had an amazing time. The event was well organised and very interactive. One child was so inspired they said they wanted to become a ranger—thanks to Luke and Richard for their encouragement! The children loved meeting Ralph and his calves, making butter with Briddlesford Farm, and watching the Isle of Wight Academy show. It was a great day for everyone involved. Thank you to all who made it happen.”
Following the success of this year’s event, RIWAS has announced plans to expand the Education Day in 2026. The next event will be held on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.
