The Detroit Red Wings are partnering with the National Hockey League (NHL) and the NHL Players Association on a new pilot program. This program mixes competitive esports with educational activities for young people. Called the “Game On: NHL/NHLPA Academic Gaming Program,” it aims to improve digital skills, leadership, and teamwork in students aged 13 to 21. Participants engage through virtual hockey games and guided learning sessions.
Red Wings and Other Teams Launch Esports and Skill Development Pilot
Alongside the Detroit Red Wings, the Los Angeles Kings and New Jersey Devils are part of the “Game On” pilot. This program was created by PlayVS, an elite amateur esports platform based in Los Angeles. Supported by the NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth Fund, Game On combines competitive EA SPORTS NHL 25 gaming with lessons in life skills and community involvement. PlayVS leads the program and focuses on building social connections and healthy competition in today’s digital world. Students taking part will join tournaments and training sessions designed to teach leadership, strategy, and teamwork. They will also have chances to interact with their local NHL teams.
Bringing Together Hockey, Gaming, and Learning
Game On offers young players exclusive events during the spring. These include team-sponsored gatherings, educational workshops, and special in-person experiences. The first event took place on March 20 during the New Jersey Devils’ Gaming Group theme night. Over 40 students and coaches met at the Prudential Center for interactive esports activities. The event featured appearances by team executives, former players, and the Devils’ mascot.
The Detroit Red Wings plan to host similar student-focused events this spring and summer. These will give local youth the chance to enjoy a hockey-themed digital experience.
The program will conclude with a nationwide virtual tournament from June 13 to 15. Hosted by PlayVS on its stadium platform, the EA SPORTS NHL 25 tournament will bring together players from across the U.S. to compete, connect, and celebrate hockey and online gaming culture.
More Than Just Video Games
PlayVS CEO Jon Chapman emphasized that the program goes beyond gaming. “Gaming can bring young players together in meaningful and lasting ways,” Chapman said. “With support from the NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth Fund, we are creating new chances for players to enjoy their favorite sport while learning important skills like leadership, communication, and resilience through friendly competition.”
Building a Path for Esports in Hockey
Currently in its pilot phase, the Game On program aims to become a model for large esports initiatives across North America. By offering students a structured and active gaming experience, PlayVS and the NHL/NHLPA hope to open new doors for learning, socializing, and team building beyond the traditional hockey rink.
