The University of Maine (UMaine) is teaming up with the Alfond Youth Community Center to prepare local students for future careers through hands-on STEAM learning.
The partnership, finalized Thursday at the Waterville youth center, focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) education. Programs will include internships, faculty-led training, and interactive projects.
One early initiative—a weather station designed by a UMaine professor—teaches kids to collect and analyze real-world weather data. More activities are in development, officials said.
“We’re finalizing the lineup of learning modules, but there’s a wide range of projects planned,” said Dr. Sean Birkel, UMaine professor and Maine State Climatologist.
The collaboration aims to equip Waterville youth with skills for growing STEAM fields. Additional programs will roll out in coming months.
