The Group Managing Director of Digital Space Capital, Dr. Mrs. Bukola Abitoye, has urged parents and children to adopt a safer and more reliable saving culture.
She made this call over the weekend during a partnership event between Digikolo and the Florence Modupe Foundation. The event marked the Juvenile Harvest celebration of the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) in Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos.
Dr. Abitoye warned that many Nigerians have lost millions of naira and even dollars to fraudsters posing as trustworthy financial institutions.
She encouraged parents to teach their children the value of saving money. According to her, knowing the right place to save can protect people from falling victim to scams and ponzi schemes.
“We were brought up saving money in small boxes called ‘kolo’. Many children today know these as piggy banks. But even without a physical ‘kolo’, saving money is possible through your phone,” she explained.
Dr. Abitoye introduced Digikolo, a money-saving app designed to help Nigerians keep their money safe. “With Digikolo, you can rest easy knowing your money is secure. We do not engage in fraud or make empty promises. Simply download the app, follow the steps, and save your money in a safer wallet,” she added.
She also demonstrated to the children how to download the Digikolo app and save their pocket money effectively.
“When I was a child, I saved any money I received in my ‘kolo’ or piggy bank. Whenever I opened it, I found a good amount saved. I advise children to start saving early and not to spend all they have, but keep some for the future,” Dr. Abitoye said.
The funfare event provided a great platform for both the Florence Modupe Foundation and Digikolo to give back to the community. It also helped promote the importance of good savings habits among children.
The Florence Modupe Foundation is a registered NGO that focuses on providing fair access to quality education and essential skills for Africans, especially women and children. This mission aligns closely with Digikolo’s goal of empowering people through financial literacy.
During the celebration, Digikolo team members engaged with children, sharing practical advice on saving and managing money. The event featured fun and educational activities for the young attendees.
Digikolo, a subsidiary of Digital Space Capital, aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to make smart financial decisions.
