Aldine Independent School District (Aldine ISD) officially launched its summer meal program on Monday, June 2, with a community event at Reed Academy. The event was held in partnership with No Kid Hungry Texas and marked the second annual Summer Feeding Kickoff.
The celebration brought families together with free meals, fun activities, and giveaways aimed at supporting children’s well-being over the summer. Children 18 and under received healthy lunches at no cost. Families also enjoyed a range of activities, including a petting zoo and a bike-powered smoothie station.
In addition to food and fun, organizers handed out free books and sunscreen to help children stay safe and continue learning during the summer months.
“Last year, the summer feeding program provided over 63,000 breakfasts and more than 100,000 lunches to Aldine ISD students,” said Dr. LaTonya Goffney, Superintendent of Schools. “We are excited to welcome students again this summer with hot, delicious meals offered at 30 locations across the district.”
No Kid Hungry, a national campaign by the nonprofit Share Our Strength, supports programs that fight hunger in the U.S. Their partnership helps districts like Aldine ISD address the increased risk of food insecurity that many families face during the summer.
In Harris County, one in four children experiences food insecurity. For many families, the absence of school meals in the summer adds pressure to already tight food budgets. Aldine ISD’s summer meal program helps fill that gap by offering free, nutritious meals to all local children and teens.
The program will continue throughout the summer break, ensuring young people in the community get the nutrition they need to stay healthy, active, and ready to learn.
