Little People’s College has opened a new child care center in New Bedford, its first expansion in 17 years. The center, located at 107 Welby Road, is designed to serve over 200 children between the ages of 5 and 13.
The facility offers both before- and after-school care during the academic year. It will also provide full-day programs during school vacations and throughout the summer.
The new campus helps meet the rising demand for early childhood education in New Bedford and nearby communities. By moving school-age programs to the Welby Road location, Little People’s College can now open up more spaces for preschool and pre-kindergarten students at its other centers.
“We’re thrilled to open our doors in this stunning, newly-designed environment,” said Dr. Kimberly Rego Watkins, program administrator. “This expansion allows us to serve more families, offer enriching programs to school-age children, and continue making early education more accessible to our community. That’s something we’re incredibly proud to expand upon.”
Inside the new center, children will find large, well-equipped classrooms that support learning through play. Activity centers include spaces for reading, math, science, art, woodworking, and pretend play. The facility also features group games like ping pong and air hockey to help children build social and emotional skills.
The building is designed to feel calm and welcoming, with soft colors, big windows, and open spaces. A full kitchen on site prepares fresh meals and snacks daily. A new playground is also being added.
The center is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care. This ensures it follows the state’s strict health, safety, and learning rules. Families can pay using various methods, including a sliding fee scale. Transportation is available to and from home and school.
Enrollment is now open for both the school year and summer programs. The campus serves children aged 5 to 13 and is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Full-day summer care will begin on June 23, 2025.
An official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place later this summer. Until then, families are welcome to stop by, tour the facility, meet the staff, and ask questions.
