Pittsburg State University is making reading a priority for children during their summer break.
The university’s Center for Reading is once again offering the Secret Codes Camp. This camp is designed for children who want to improve their reading skills or need extra help learning to read.
The Center for Reading is known for its scientific research on reading difficulties and ADHD. It develops interventions and evaluation tools to identify children who struggle with reading. Then, it works to help those children become confident readers.
The camp runs daily 50-minute sessions and continues through July 25.
Dr. David P. Hurford, PSU’s executive director of the Center for Reading, explained, “The English writing system is like a code. You need to teach children how to decode letters into sounds. It is important to show them that letters represent specific sounds. We have tried to make this learning process both easy and fun. Children who attend our Secret Codes camp usually do very well.”
In addition to working with children, the Center for Reading also supports adults and paraprofessionals throughout the year.
