Danville Head Start Program Marks 60 Years of Community Impact

by Beatrice

The Danville Head Start Pre-K program in Montour County is celebrating a significant milestone—its 60th anniversary of service to the community.

Founded in 1965, the program was created as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “War on Poverty.” Head Start aimed to provide educational opportunities to children from low-income families.

“Early childhood education has always been important, and it’s even more crucial today. To have a federal program last 60 years is an incredible achievement,” said Linda Marshall, Director of the Danville Area School District’s Head Start program.

Marshall reflected on the lasting impact of the program on the Danville community over the past six decades. Parents like Sarah Ruhl, whose daughter currently attends the program, expressed the value it brings to their families.

“As a single mom, I’m grateful for the early education my child receives. It’s a great opportunity for her to interact with other kids her age and build lasting relationships within the community,” Ruhl, from Danville, shared.

Marshall attributes the program’s longevity to the dedication of its staff and the profound impact it has on children and families.

“When you experience Head Start, you can’t help but fall in love with the work. The difference it makes in the lives of families and children is truly remarkable,” she said.

The Danville Area School District partners with the Head Start program and fully supports its mission. The district values the program’s focus on early literacy, education, and family involvement.

“We find that children from the Head Start program are well-prepared for Kindergarten. We congratulate the program on this milestone and are grateful for its impact on both the local and national levels,” said Dr. Molly Nied, Superintendent of Danville Area School District.

Parents have shared how the program has helped their children develop important social skills.

“My daughter was very shy, but now she’s gained confidence and formed meaningful relationships with both teachers and peers,” Ruhl said.

Looking forward, Marshall hopes the Danville Head Start Pre-K program will continue to grow and serve future generations for many more years.
