Protest in Dublin Demands Better School Access for Children with Additional Needs

by Beatrice

Recently, large protests broke out in Dublin, with parents and activists calling for better educational opportunities for children with disabilities and other special needs. Many children, including those with autism, will still not be able to attend school in the upcoming school year.

Demonstrators gathered in the Gardens of Remembrance, holding signs calling for equality in education. Some protesters had previously camped outside Leinster House in April to draw attention to the issue. Several opposition politicians also joined the rally in support.

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald spoke at the protest, criticizing the government’s handling of the crisis.

“Every child has the right to an education, but many families are repeatedly turned away from schools,” she said. “Parents have submitted dozens of applications only to be told there are no places for their children.”

She added that the government’s commitment to support children with disabilities has not translated into action.

“These families are exhausted and heartbroken,” McDonald said. “No child should be left behind, legally, morally or socially. The government must act now.”

The protest highlights growing frustration over a lack of school places, which is leaving many families in dire straits.
