Parents in Queensland who drive their children to school can receive financial assistance from the government. The School Transport Assistance Scheme offers grants to families who use their private cars to transport their children to school or to the nearest bus or train station.
To be eligible for the grant, families must meet distance requirements. The nearest public primary school must be over 3.2 kilometres away, or the nearest public secondary school must be over 4.8 kilometres away. Parents of children attending non-public schools can also apply, provided they do not live within the required distance from the nearest public or non-public school.
The scheme also covers grants for families whose children travel by bus, ferry, train, or light rail. Additionally, safety net assistance is available for students who hold health care cards, pension concession cards, or are under a child protection order.
