A new gaming lounge, Ethlete Lab Academy, is set to open in downtown Lakewood, offering kids a unique after-school space to play, learn, and explore careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
The brainchild of CEO and co-founder Michael Newton, the academy aims to provide a safe and welcoming environment where kids can pursue their passions while parents feel at ease.
“We wanted to create a space where kids can come in, have fun, and enjoy themselves in a safe and supportive setting,” Newton explained.
The facility features a main PC gaming area, two streaming pods, a classroom, and a console lounge. The walls are adorned with vibrant graffiti, creating a bold and energetic atmosphere.
“We wanted the design to be exciting and engaging, giving kids a place where they can truly have fun,” Newton added.
Newton brings a wealth of experience in gaming and esports to the project. He previously coached the Golden State Warriors 2K League and led the Cavaliers Esports team to the NBA 2K League Final Four last year. At Ethlete Lab Academy, he plans to combine gaming with education, offering classes and camps in cybersecurity, game design, programming, and coding.
“We want to introduce kids to these fast-growing career fields as early as possible,” Newton said. “By providing ongoing educational courses, we hope to prepare them for future opportunities and help them discover potential career paths.”
In addition to gaming and STEM programs, the lab will host educational pop-up events for parents. These sessions will focus on how to navigate technology with their children and ensure their safety online.
The idea for Ethlete Lab Academy came from Newton’s own experiences. While walking around Lakewood with his daughter, he noticed a lack of engaging activities for kids. Now, with the lab set to open, he’s excited to welcome the community.
“When the first person walks through the door, I want them to feel the same sense of excitement and belonging that I do because we’re all part of this family,” Newton shared.
Ethlete Lab Academy will hold its VIP opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, March 1, and will open to the public on Monday, March 3.
This new space promises to be a hub for fun, learning, and community, giving Lakewood’s kids a place to grow and thrive.
