The Desert Research Institute (DRI) is offering a series of free STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) events designed specifically for Pre-K children. Running from March through May, these events aim to foster early literacy through engaging science-based activities.
Each event will feature hands-on experiments, interactive games, and story time to make learning fun and accessible for young minds. Additionally, children will receive free books, subject to availability, to encourage continued learning at home.
The events will be held in various locations across Nevada, with each session focusing on a specific theme.
Here’s a breakdown of the schedule:
Mesquite: March 15, 12:30–2:30 p.m. at the Mesquite Works STEAM Center (Theme: Ecosystems)
Reno: March 15, 3:00–6:00 p.m. at the Reno Public Market (Theme: Electricity)
Elko: April 25, 3:00–6:00 p.m. at the Elko Library (Theme: Electricity)
Winnemucca: April 26, 12:00–3:00 p.m. at the Humboldt County Library (Theme: Electricity)
Las Vegas: April 27, 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. at the Clark County Library (Theme: Ecosystems)
Boulder City: May 17, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. at the Boulder City Library (Theme: Ecosystems)

In addition to the events, DRI’s STEM Education Team is supporting Nevada teachers by providing access to educational kits. These kits, titled Ecosystem Explorers and It’s Electric, are part of the institute’s Green Box program. They include the same activities used during the events, allowing educators to bring STEM learning into their classrooms.
