Yesterday, Governor Josh Stein visited Kate’s Korner, a Durham Child Care Center, to announce the formation of a new Child Care and Early Education Task Force. The task force will focus on expanding affordable, high-quality child care in North Carolina and supporting child care workers. Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunter and Senator Jim Bergin will co-chair the group.
Governor Stein emphasized the importance of investing in child care for the state’s families. “When we invest in child care, everyone benefits,” he said. “Parents can continue their careers, small businesses retain productive workers, and most importantly, children receive a nurturing environment that shapes their future education.”
The task force aims to address the challenges of child care in the state. “North Carolinians are hardworking, and our community colleges are preparing people for the jobs of today and tomorrow,” Lieutenant Governor Hunter stated. “However, parents need to know their children are safe and supported while they work. This task force will take critical steps to solve the child care crisis, ensuring providers stay open, children get the care they need, and parents can return to work.”
Senator Jim Burgin added, “North Carolina’s strength is in its families, and quality child care is key to their well-being. I’m proud to co-chair this task force to make North Carolina the best state to raise a family.”
Governor Stein also signed an executive order creating the task force. It will evaluate the current child care system, identify areas for improvement, and recommend public and private investments to support child care infrastructure. Additionally, the task force will work on strategies to recruit and retain a skilled child care workforce. Reports and recommendations will be submitted to the Governor and made public.
